| LINKED COUNCILS | |
|
When building Taxi Driver Data we were very aware that in
a nationally distributed system where potentially the database could
contain many thousands of entries, some method of controlling data
searches needed to be implemented. Within the database every council in Great Britain is recorded. When an organisation joins the scheme it has the ability to form a group or cluster of 'linked' councils to itself. This is easily done by visiting an administration screen where councils may be selected from a drop down control and simply added to the organisations own list. Typically linked councils will be ones which border a councils own or those within its own county for instance. Once a council has selected the other councils it wishes to be linked to data recorded by them then becomes available during searches made within the database. This has two effects, firstly it extends the councils range of intelligence searching which is the main purpose of the system as a whole. Secondly however, and perhaps just as importantly, it limits the number of records being returned. If a council was searching for a driver called John Smith, there would be little point in records of such a driver working in Scotland being returned to councils in Nottingham. The system however is flexible enough to cater for extended searches. If for instance a council wished to search an unrelated councils data for some reason they may return to the linking screen and link that council to their own temporarily in order to check their available data. Un-linking a council is just as easy as linking one and can be achieved at the click of a hyperlink on the same screen. |
